[Advertisement.] THE CASE OF MAKING THE FALSE DECLARATION. To the Editor of the Daily Southern Cross. SIR,— Ag I hare been told that it was owing to the evidence given by me in the case against Mr. Mahoney, the contractor for the works near the breakwater, heard yesterday in the Resident Magistrate's Court, that Mr. Mahouey was committed for trial, I am anxious to state, in justice to him, that I made a serious mistake in my evidence. I stated that I did not receive the letter from Mr. Mahoney complaining of the way I was carrying on my agreement with him, and threatening to employ horses and carts at my expense, until aftei- he told me he had received the money from the Government; but! have sineS discovered, from the letter itself, that T was wrong, and that I received the letter before Mr. Mahoney had received the £70 from the Government. I was also wrong in saying that Mr. Mahoney had not disputed my claim. I did not kuowwhat the case was about when I was in the court. I w»s told late in the afternoon, before the day the case came off, that I was wanted as a witness to prove that 1 had a claim against Mr. Mahoney. Henry Smith.
