NON-REPRESENTATION.
To the Editor of tlio Daiiy SouTntimCnoss. Sin,— How is ifc possible that «ome of tho settlements north of Auckland oan-be properly represented whilo the present system exists ? • T do notkuowthe exact boundaries of tho county of Marsden. Tt is enough for our purpose to say that it iucliulos Albeitland, and its variousibbUloments; also tho parhhesof Mnngawai, Ami, Waipu, and Wangaroi. Wadon rands throo momben. to tbe Provincial Council, and it would havo been but, fail- and reasonable to expect that the place of noiAination should havo been as central as possible, between Port Albtrt and Wangarci, so that the settlers might attend to support any member they might feel disposed to put in nomination. Blessed nre those that oxpeot nothing j as in this slnccish province they will- be sorely disappointed! Formerly theto were few inhabitants between Wanearel and Albertland, but within the last few years a large population has been located on the hitherto nnoconpied land. Increase of population, however, has not been taken into account, and, ns heretofore, tho place of uonriuation for Marsdeu is at Wangarei. What is tho consequence of this state of things ? The Port Albert settlers say: We should have likod to put in a member for Marsden, but how can we take a rugged journey of sixty miles to Wangaroi to nominate one ' Wanga'rei and the Arai sent two gentlemen to the place of nomination, but, being in the land of the stranger, aud some 'hirly five miles from their own districts and friends, they found there was au overwhelming show of hands against them, aud, therefore, wisely retired from tho contest ; and so, through our not moving with the times and making needful alterations as population increases and the country progrewei, there is now a tract of country in the North about sixty miles in length which has not a single member to represent ifc. ' As this has happened, we hope tho Council, in its deliberations, will not lose sight of theie unrepresented settlements in the North, or their requirements. But au entire revision of the country representation is needed. Why should the city of Auckland, including the Pensioner Settlements, send twentytwo members to represent it in the Council, when the wholo province besides has only eighteen, and the City of London only four members ? But comparisons may to some be odious. — Yours, &c, A NOKTIIKRN SfcTTLBR.
