AN EXPLANATION.

To the Editor of the Daily Southern Cross. Sir,— You will confer a favour by amending the report of yesterday, in a matter concerning which I deiire to be prcciae, and have always been precise. I said " that I had never receded onoinch from the positfon I had taken long since, in regard to tho native war. That ■when the question of the Waitara was moved in the House, I had said, ' Give back the stolen propeity ; but fight them on, because they are levying war against tho Queen ' T added that I was quito aware of the legal point which had been Tailed, namely, that where there was only a private object to be attained, or a private grievance to bo redressed, the offence did not amount to the crime of treason ; but that in my own opinion, the insurgent natives (taking the fact of their being in anni, together with King movement) must bo considered in rebellion. And I maintained, as before, that no amount of injustice or oppression could justify a subject in raising his hand against the Queen." This high prerogative doctrine elicited an expression of dislent from the House. I may be singular in holding it : but it is thus, consistently with principle, that I justify a high* handed suppression of the rebellion.— -I liavo, &c, lluqii Carletom. December 7, 1864.
