THE TROOPS FOR NEW ZEALAND.
It has been deckled by the Government not to cavry out their onginal intention of employing a foic« of Sikhs in New Zealand. Tlie reasons for this change liave nothing to do with the lmnaiks maclu in the House of Commons upon the constitutional question suppose^- to be involved in the employment of Indian troops i^tt of India. It aiiscs fiom financial comideialions alone, it beiug found that, as a matter of direct economy as well a3 financial symmetry, it is desirable to have the whole force in New Zealand composed of Europeans. Upon consideration, thoiefoie, the Government have detei mined, and wo think wisely, to substitute Eiuopcan for Sikh soldiers in New Zealand II wni originally intended to send General Cameron 3,000 additional tioops, and this number will be adhered to. The Indian establishment will be left for the moment short of a regiment by the diversion of the 50th to New Zealand, but this will not cause practical inconvenience, and it is not intended to send outtlie 55th, the corps now standing fiist on the roster for foieign service When these ai rangeinents aio completed, General C.imeion will have under his command the Ist battalion 12th, 2nd battalion 14th, 2nd battalion 18th, 40th, 50th, 57th, Gsth, 70th, and two battalions from India, making ten in all, or a foica of about 7,000 bayonets. — Home Neivs, August 26.
