A STRANGE RUMOUR. (Front the Wellington Independent, Nov. 18 )
No one seems to know on what footing the ' White Swan' is now running. Some say she is subsidized by the General Government, others by the Auckland Province, and others again by Hawke's Bay. The General Government cannot do so, consistently with its engagement to the Coleman Company to subsidize none but vessels belonging to them. The Auckland Province has no funds, and cannot subsidize her if it would. Hawke's Bay may be contributing towards the 'White Swan,' as it does to the ( Wonga Wonga ;' but still there is some mystery about the matter, as the General Government and the Hawke's Bay Government seem both to be connected with it. Indeed there is a strange rumour current, one which we have traced to its source and therefore venture to give publicity, that the General Government have intimated to Hawke's Bay that if the 'Wonga Wonga's ' subsidy is continued by the latter; the subsidy for the ' White Swan,' contributed by the former, will be withdrawn. We forbear to comment until we are in possession of the particulars, which will probably be asked for in the Council which meets at Napier towards the end of this month, instead of the 23rd of next as formerly contemplated.
