THE WONGA STEAMER AT WELLINGTON. {From the New Zealand Spectator, Nov. 30.)
I The Council yesterday was occupied chiefly with a I discussion on the subsidy to be granted to the "Wong* Wonga." The objection taken from the practice of the House of Commons which we referred to last Saturday (26th Nov.) was held to be inapplicable, the Council with reference to these matters having hitherto pursued an opposite course, and in a body consisting of so small a number it was deemed that such a rule would be found ta be impracticable. The Provincial Secretary resisted the motion to the last, and when the resolution was agreed to in Committee, on its being reported, moved an amendment to the effect, that if the little loan of £25,000 were passed by the Council, "if the Council would retrace its steps, and agree to the measures broughV forward by the Executive, this additional .£soo to theaulrsidy to the "Wonga Wonga" as placed on the Estimates would be allowed. We need hardly say that sucb^'-pioposal was not entertained, and the resolution increasing the subsidy of the " Wonga" to the rate of £1000 per annum was adopted by the Council. We may add with reference to the " Wonga" subsidy that from the "Hawke's Bay Herald," we learn a despatch had been received by the Superintendent of that Provinoe, from H. T. Tancred, Esq., for the Colonial Secretary, recommending that the subsidy to the " Wonga" should be withdrawn, as interfering with the arrangements made with the " White Swan." We are sorry that the General Government have attempted this piece of dictation to the new Province, which we hope the Superintendent and his Executive will have the good sense and courage to resist.
