Government Accused Of Complacency LONDON. October 24. During the debate on the Budget in the House of Commons, Sir John Anderson, Chancellor of the Exchequer, in the late Coalition, said he confessed that (lie first Budget of a fully responsible Labour Government showed, promise which he hoped would be fulfilled in further instalments as they came along. At the same time he thought the Government was too complacent about expenditure going on at the present rate for the rest of the financial year and he urged a vigorous economic campaign in tlie spending departments. He approved of restraint of purchasing power and firin control of prices, but believed price control could only be successful if wages were kept at reasonable levels. lie endorsed the Chancellor's cautious steps toward (ax reliefs, emphasizing that the danger of inflation was always lurking in the background. Sir John wished more could have been said about the Washington talks, but .added ' that be had the' greatest couftdeuce in the competence of the British negotiators.
