Provision For Large Families

In response' to an inquiry, the Minister of Finance Mr., Nash, stated that the number of unsatisfied applicants for State rental houses in Wellington on June 30 was 10,761, being 245 in excess of the number registered on March 31 last (10,516). “Provision of Suitable homes for large families has always been advocated by this Government,” Mr. Nash said yesterday. “As quickly as accommodation can be built it will be allotted. Last week eight families comprising 15 parents and 5S children were allotted separate units in the new development in the Hutt Valley. These, families came from various parts of "Wellington and the Hutt Valley and had been living in very congested circumstances. The new environment will be some reward to those excellent New Zealanders and will give them an opportunity to bring their children up -in more suitable surroundings.” Tlie Government was alive to the difficulties being experienced by many people and it was the intention to push the housing programme forward as rapidly as possible. .
