ANOTHER BATCH GOES SOUTH
(By St. Simon.)
A further 13 horses with engagements at tho Grand National meeting went south by tlio steamer express last night. Those aboard were The Dude, Kliurja, Edward, Carthage, Reornpa,' Ramicourt,. Master Meruit, Caprone]!!!, Kanui te Pai. bandy Cape, Royal Heir, Matapan and Extra. Khiirju Thriving. Mrs. L. Campbell has four horses under her care—-Khurja, Edward, Keora-pa and Carthago. The last-named is being offered for sale. Kliurja has done well during the last two weeks, having thrived on the work and schooling he has hud at Hastings, aud though he has not had a race since the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase iu Juno, ho is fairly forward, and is expected to run well in the Grand National Steeplechase, a race in which he fell last year when leading threo fences from home. Nothing definite has been decided about a rider for Khurja; but it is probable that I. Walther, who has schooled him throughout the season, will be on him at lilccarton. Itoorapa, a lightweight fancy for tlie Winter Cup, will be ridden by L. J. Ellis or N. B. Holland.
Not Going South. Dunvegau, a hunter in Mrs. Campbells stable, was nominated for the minor steeplechase -on the second day of the Grand National meeting, but will not make the trip. Next week he is to contest the Hunt Cup at the combined hunt meeting at Hastings, and after his promising second to Valky’s Boy at Manawatu on a •short preparation he will be one of the fancied candidates. Progress of The Dude. Tho Dude has been located at Awapunl since the Wellington meeting, and he was schooled over a round of the hurdles on Thursday morning, performing satisfactorily and finishing out his task solidly. The Dude is a fit horse, and will be ridden in the Grand National Hurdles by AV. Skillington. He is the plodding type of stayer, and the extra distance of the Grand National Hurdles should not prove any trouble to him. On his third to Good Armour and Arabian Night In the "Wellington Winter Hurdles he can be given a "chance at Iticcarton. Hurdles Candidate. The failure of Greek Effort to run up to expectations in his Trcntham Hurdles engagement was due to his being struck in an eye by a clod of earth. Since then he lias worked pleasingly at Awapunl, and ho is to fulfil his Iticcarton engagements. AV. Jenkins, who won the Rangitira Hurdles on him at Awapunl, will ride him in the south. On Thursday morning Greek Effort ran a mile in company with Kaitoa, Renascor, Foxiana, Lightfair and Sandy Cape. Greek Effort, Sandy Cape and Renascor were on terms in front at the end of tho task in 1.5 G 2-5, tho first five furlongs in 1.14 aud the last threo in 42 2-5. Kaitoa and Lightfair, going comfortably, wore two lengths away and Foxiana, who was under a nice hold, was further back.
Answers to Inquiries. “Peter," Masterton: Toxeuma, foaled in 1925, was by Arrowsmith from Te Aupaki. "A.L.,” Lower Hutt: The Hawk won the Taranaki Cup in 1930. He was ridden by S, Wilson. Tho distance was one mile and a half.
