Royal Agricultural Society TRIBUTE TO RETIRING PRESIDENT
The Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand, at its annual meeting in Wellington yesterday, which was attended by some 50 delegates and members from all parts of the Dominion, decided to hold over the fixing of the date of the next Royal Show till next annual meeting. The president. Mr. L. J. Wild, in moving the adoption of the annual report, said the N.Z. Farmers’ Union during the past year had changed its attitude toward the establishment in New Zealand of a School of Veterinary Science. It appeared as if the union’s attitude had been brought about by consideration of cost. There would come a time when New Zealand would have to compete in the markets of the world, and they would have to see that all products were entirely free from any taint of disease. In the battle for peace the farmer would be the spearhead of the attack. Never in the history of the world had food been more important than at the present time. In seconding the motion to adopt the report, Mr. B. E. Keiller (Palmerston North), a vice-president of the society, said the society was in a very healthy position', owing largely to the president’s keenness in seeing that the society should be built up as soundly as possible. The motion to adopt the report and bal-ance-sheet was carried.
On the motion of Mr.’Wild. Mr. B. E. Keiller, the only person nominated for the position, was elected president of the society. In returning thanks for his election. Mr. Keiller said 1 that he agreed with the outgoing president that the society should keep clear of politics. Quality, not quantity, should be the keynote of production in New Zealand. He moved that the society place on record the valuable service which Mr. Wild had given during his terril of 11 years as president. The publication of the society’s gazette had been due to Mr. Wild, who had recently been appointed editor of the publication, and they would certainly not let him relinquish that office. The motion was carried by acclamation.
A remit from ,the southern district council, asking the society to approach the Meat Board with a request that the meat values of healthy two-tooth rams be invesigated with a view to increasing the export of boneless meat, . and that the price paid by the freezing works for such rams be looked into, was approved. The following recommendation by the council was adopted: “With a view to further improvement of New Zealand live stock, this council recommends to all A. and P. Associations, breed societies, and other authorities controlling ram and bull fairs, the universal adoption of a policy of inspection by inspectors of the particular breed societies concerned of all animals submitted for sale.” A remit from the Feilding A. and P. Association, suggesting that the Government be urged to provide in New. Zealand instruction in veterinary science, was carried unanimously. A remit from Waikato, requesting the society to urge on the Government that greater facilities be given for educating young farmers, was carried. The election of officers resulted as follows : President, Mr. B. E. Keiller (Pal merston North) ; vice-presidents, Messrs'. L. McLean (Hawke’s Bay), and W. M. Bishell (Blenheim) ; hon. treasurer, Mr L. J. Wild (Feildiug) ; auditor, Mr. S. E. Lambert.
