Third Army’s Aid In Crisis
NAZIS’ REPULSE
(Received December 30, 1.10 a.m.) LONDON, December 20. It can now be revealed that General ration’s Third Army was thrown into the battle in the most critical hours lhe iorces dashed sixty miles northward from the Saar front to meet and throw back the Germans after they had got within 13 miles of the city of Luxemburg. After that the Third Army went on to relieve Bastogne and recapture Echtcrnach. Writing for tlie North American Newspaper Alliance, the French publicist “Pertinax” says: “The German counteroffensive has shown the Allies, an important lesson fraught with military ami political implications sufficiently far-reaching,-apart from other considerations, to justify a meeting of the ‘big three.’ It has shown that German civilians, irrespective of age and physical qualifications, can be transformed into efficient soldiers by three months of intensive training. These Volkssturmer have not merely assigned a passive defence, but have parti-' cipated in the drives in Luxenbourg and Belgium. “This necessitates a new estimate ot German manpower and a revaluation pi the Allied manpower requirements in Europe. Some observers believe this may involve a revision of the Pacific strategy, particularly if attention is paid to Mr. Richard Law’s contention that the economic assistance for the liberated countries must be extended lest chaotic conditions prevail in them,, thus requiring additional Anglo-American tioops.”
