SKILL AND COURAGE

Award Of Distinguished Flying Cross For his skill, courage and devotion to duty, Acting Squadron Leader Mathew Garry Barnett, of Wellington,-has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. At the outbreak of war Squadron Leader Barnett, who is now 26, was a member of the Civil Reserve of Pilots. He joined the R.N.Z.A.F., and after qualifying for hig flying badge was commissioned and retained for a time as a staff pilot. His education was obtained at Wellington College and Victoria University College. Squadron Leader Barnett left for England in December, 3941. In May, 1942, he was reported missing on air operations'. He had to bail out and was made a prisoner of war at Nice. A month later he arrived back in England and resumed operational flying. His father is Mr. M. O. Barnett, 87 Fairlie Terrace, Wellington.
