EASING A CURVE

Manners Street Tram Track Half-way between Willis and Cuba Streets, Wellington, Manners Street der scribes a curve which has always been considered too acute for tramway track purposes. Advantage is now being taken of track renewal work there to ease this bend by laying the new rails some 15 inches to the north, which will make an appreciable difference to the running of the cars over this section. Another trackstabilizing improvement at this point is the use of old rails as sleepers. Cut into suitable lengths, and laid under the track foot upward these improvised sleepers are then welded to the track, about 12 feet apart. Even the Manners Street tradespeople consider that the gang employed on this section is doing fine work, and have not been backward in saying so to the tramway authorities. " The easing of the curve will probably be compensated for in road space by setting back the footpath two or three feet at that point.
