ESCAPE ROUTES IN ITALY
Precarious Position For Enemy HEAVY BOMBING (British Official Wireless.) (Received August 27, 9.30 p.m.) RUGBY, August 26. Fortresses escorted by Lightnings have bombed viaducts and bridges on the only railway lines open to German military traffic in northern Italy, reports a Rome correspondent. Three lines into Italy were attacked. Hits were reported at the Avisio viaduct, just north of Trento on the Brenner line, the Venzone viaduct on the line from Austria to Udine, and the Borovnica viaduct in Yugoslavia. The final Fortress target was the Latisaua railway bridge over the -larim" mento River, between Venice and . Trieste. Liberators attacked the Ferrari railway bridge over the Po River for the third time in four days. Other Liberators reported good pattern bombs on the German-held Otopeni aerodrome, nine miles north of Bucharest. More Liberators struck at the barracks a.t Bankasa, 10 miles north-east of Bucharest, and the train ferry across the Danube at Giur’giu.
