ADVANCES IN BURMA

’ (British Official Wireless.) (Received August 27, 7 p.m.) RUGBY, August 26. The Burma communique says that elements of the 36th division have advanced to within a mile and a half north of Pinbaw, in north Burma. On tlie Chindwin front the enemy evacuated a village 13 miles east of Tamil on the Sittaung track, and our troops are moving forward to regain contact. The Fourteenth Army on the Tiddim Road made new advances against infantry and artillery opposition. Over 10,000 square miles of north Burma have been recaptured and more than 20,000 Japanese killed, says an Associated Press correspondent. Allied equipment taken 'by the Japanese in the 1942 retreat is being recaptured and used by the Allies. It includes automobiles, motor-boat engines, and anti-tank .guns.
