UNIVERSITY WOMEN MEET
Members of the University Women’s Club met recently for their annual meeting, and the following officers were elected for the year, 1044-45: I’resident, Miss E. Watson’; vice-presidents, Mesdames J. Flower, G. Northe, G. G. Watson, and Misses L. Van Staveren, E. Kind, E. Vickery and Rennie; chairman, Mrs. Lochhead; hon. secretary, Miss R. C. Beclrway; assistant secretary, Miss J. A tkinson; lion, treasurer, Mrs. A. Mackay; committee, Mesdames J. Edgar, R. Reid, TV. Ross. C. Ball, and Misses R. Herrick, M. Goodwin, and D. McLeod. After discussing business matters, the house committee served supper.
Guest Speaker at Stokes Valley. There was a good at tendance, presided over by the president, Mrs. A. L. Ttiyior, at the August meeting of the Stokes 1 alley Women’s Institute. The speaker, Mrs. Horn, Dominion secretary, gave a talk on the Maori institutes in the far north. A bracket of songs were sung by the choir, led by Mrs. C. E. Tanner. There was n “bring and buy” stall which, was well filled. A competition, making ginger nuts for soldiers, was won by Mrs. Guise, with Mrs. S. Kay second.
Party for Backward Children. The Wellington After-Care Association (for backward children) held a party recently in the clubroom, 41 Kent Terrace. to celebrate the fourteenth birthday of the children's club. Mrs. David Coutts, J.P.. president, welcomed the mothers and children. Games and music were enjoyed and a delightful afternoon tea and birthdsiy cake were served by committee members. Mrs. Bycroft, on behalf of the visitors, thanked the president ami committee for their kindness to the children. Dance for Four Northland Men. The Northland branch of the U.S.A, women's section recently welcomed home four local men at a most successful oldtime dance. In a brief speech, Mr. 11. McDougall greeted the servicemen. Gunner M. AV. Lambert. Pte. R. G. Knight, Pte. M. Rosen and W.0.11 M. P. Cleary. Mrs. Anslow, secretary, read apologies from the Prime Minister. Mr. Fraser, and Mrs. Fraser, and on. Mrs. Fraser’s behalf received the guests.
