Early Fuel Rationing In Australia (Received August 17, 11 p.m.) CANBERRA, August 17. Australia’s coal position has be,come so serious that early fuel rationing is regarded as inevitable. The plans are believed to include drastic cuts in, tram services, the rationing of domestic gas and electricity, the closing down of, some industries aud the skeleton operation ot others. ~ . The Prime Minister. Mr. Curtin, is, understood to have instructed the Minister of Supply. Mr. Beasley, and, the Comruonwealth Coal Commissioner.. Air. Mighell, that, if they believe rationing is necessary, to introduce such a, scheme without regard for any effect it might have on the referendum. The threat ot early action was increased today when 13 mines were idle for the loss of-more than 14,000 tons of coal. Nearly 4000 miners are not working. Stoppages this week have meant a loss of 45,000 tons or coal.
