TRAIL OF HAVOC

Chindits In North Burma

(Britisli Official Wireless.) (Received July 24, 10 p.m.) RUGBY, July 23.

Supplies. equipment and reinforcements continue Io How in despite monsoon conditions to the Chindits who have been well over 100 days behind the Japanese front in north Burma, leaving a trial of havoc wherever they have been. Columns which have been making havoc on the Bhamo-Myitkyina road have now turned north to assist in the operation for the reduction of Myitkyina. under unified command. They moved in to attack the Japanese in foxholes and bunkers on the east bank of the Irrawaddy. The focus of interest on the Burma front has temporarily swung from the Tiddim Road, where demolitions and slow going have deprived the 14th Army of contact with the enemy to Myitkyina, whore, as the result of small but regular gains the ring round the stubborn Japanese is steadily closing. A most significant sidelight on the Myitkyina fighting has been an increase in the number of prisoners who are bearing signs of lack of food.
