Soldiers And Manpower

Sir, —The Hon. Mr. Sullivan recently finished up an address of welcome to 415 sick and wounded with the following words: “Our one thought will be to live up to the promises we made to you when you went away.” One of those promises was in effect that a man should have his job back when he returned. Ido not doubt that Mr. Sullivan believes that promise is being given effect to. If so, he had better know how a manpower officer is defeating his intentions. A returned soldier, previously a bank clerk, was interviewed and told that as a certain Government department was in need of assistance in its office he was required to take a position with that department at a much lower salary than he would get in the bank. If Mr. Sullivan cares to inquire into this case 1 shall be pleased to supply him with the name of the man. and thus enable him to correct the manpower officer’s attempt to defeat the Government’s good intentions. —I am. etc.. T. L. PAGET.
