Petone Champion Of Champions
After some of the best bowling ever seen in a tournament of its kind the ) Vel . lin *’' ton Bowlins Centres champion of Cham pions pairs competition on the Newtown club’s green yesterday resulted m a well deserved victory for the Petone pair. W • T. Kerr aud O. Siibery (skip), who played brilliantly in the semifinal in the inornin„ to outclass the Lyall Bay pair, Pythia and Deare, .by 26 to 10. • Good bowling in the other semifinal saw A. A. Wilson and Turnbull (Hataital) get home from E. Caley and J. Mebley (Central) by the narrow margin of two points, 24-22. There was little between them at any stage. A good gathering in the afternoon saw one of the most exciting finals ever played in this contest. The Hataitai pair, started off promisingly, and led by seven to two after the seventh end had been played. Petone then scored on the next seven ends, which made the scores 13 to 7 in Petone s favour after the thirteenth erfd had been played. Hataitai rallied by scoring three on the fourteenth end and by registering a point on the next two ends made the scores 13-all on the seventeenth end. Some splendid bowling was seen, nearly every bowl which was'sent down altering the position. Kerr and Siibery were supporting each other well and they forged ahead by scoring one on the eighteenth and two on the nineteenth to lead by three 'points. Hataitai was lying three on the twentieth when Siibery trailed the kitty into the ditch to score one. Hataitai required four to tie on the last end, but could only manage to score two, and a brililant game thus saw the Petone pair 'become champion of champions by 17 to Mr. J. Norrie, president of the Wellington Bowling Centre, thanked the Newtown jßowilng Club t’or placing their green at the disposal of the centre for the tournament, and congratulated Mr. Lewis, the club’s greenkeeper, on the excellence of the green. He also thanked the umpire, Mr. J. Roberts, and Mr. C. R. Ingram, secretary of Tie centre, for their services. He announced that his victory that day had qualified Mr. Siibery for the centre’s gold medal, which is awarded to players who have gained five centre major wins. At the president’s call cheers were given for the winners and the runners-up.
