SEIZED HIS CHANCE

(R.N.Z.A.F. Official News Service.) BOUGAINVILLE, February 10. Stooging idly along the coast of Bougainville on a test flight, a New Zealand Warhawk pilot noticed activity on an enemy road to war d Kahili. He dived in closer to investigate, and by the time he had satisfied his curiosity two trucks were blazing and Japanese were scattering in all directions.

The ground staff are still chuckling ai the nonchalant’ manner he gave thii report on his return. It is a new thing; for an R.N.Z.A.F. aircraft under test to prove itself by a little action. The flight was made, after a major inspection and the installation of a new engine, to run-in the engine and see that the plane was airworthy before it started on another 240 hours’ round of duty. Ten hours’ flying is the normal time for this engine test. AU the more enterprising was today’s performance because the guns had not been harmonized and the sights not lined up. This is not generally done till after the final test flight. In his first attack the pilot used up all his ammunition, and he was immediately thirsty for more, for straight afterward he spotted another pair of Japanese trucks which he had to let go their way. “Yep, the kite was 0.K.,” he told the ground crew.
