Encouraging The Birth Rate

Sir, —I read, with interest the expressions of the Wellington branch of the Dominion Settlement Association, and agree with them that we populate or perish. There is no doubt that the economic conditions are the major factors controlling the position. Here in New Zealand we have high rents, high taxes and no consideration for expectant mothers. Our'social security payments take away 1/- of every £1 and on an average wage leave no margin for the bringing up of a family. In addition, very lititle benefit is received by the average person. AVould it not be better to toss, aside this so-called social security and have the State pay to each child born the stun of 10/- weekly till such child was 16 years of age? That would give real security to parents.—l am, etc., COMMON SENSE. Palmerston .North, February 21.
