Winston Churchill, Esquire
Sir, —'AVould any authority on the subject explain why Mr. AVinston Churchill is not a member of ffie peerage? Apparently his ancestors were Dukes of Marlborough, his father was Lord Randolph Churchill, yet AVinston is not even an honourable. Possibly it is by his own wish, hut can a peerage, when hereditary, be refused?—l am, etc., A.H.A1.8. AVaipukurau, February 19.
Winkton Churchill is the son of Lord Randolph Churchill,- who was the third son of the seventh Duke of Marlborough. The eldest son of a duke usually’ takes the title of marquess and his eldest son “tarl,” “viscount” or “lord.” The second son of a duke becomes “Lord Randolph” or whatever he was named. In fact, the younger son of a duke can never be any higher than “Lord .” Their sons are “esquires.” As Lord Randolph Churchill was the third son of a duke, his son AVinston is styled Winston Churchill, Esquire.
