A question of interest to all bodies in New Zealand as to the situation of so-called Glasgow leases’ under the new Land Sales Act came before Mr. Justice Kennedy in the Supreme Ctdrt in proceedings of the Dunedin City Cor poration against the Commissioner of St The question at issue is whether the renewal of a Glasgow lease is a enewa exempt from the provisions of the Act. or a fresh lense. The Commissionei of Taxes refused to accept the lease m question because he contends that it is new lense requiring the consent of the Land Sales Committee. The councils ease is that the Le B is lature deliberately granted exemption it this class of lease because ot the anon lilies and difficulties that would be involved in obtaining the consent of the Land Sales Committee. Ihe council argues that it would he a most onerous task for a city with an enormous num tier of such leases requiring periodical attention to deal with* them as detcuuant demanded. Judgment was reserved.
