Preserving Jars
Sir, —Can nothing be done to speed up the manufacture of preserving jars? There is not one preserving jar to be had in Wellington. Retailers tell us that supplies have been on order for nine months; telegrams and letters bring no reply from the manufacturers except "deliver in about three weeks.” This “delivery” promise has been repeated for months. Meanwhile, we are urged to conserve food. Fruit is as cheap as it will ever be this season. Many kinds will soou be off the market. Sugar rationing does not affect the bottling of fruit, as it is even better without sugar and uses less later on when the fruit is required for use. And not a bottle of fruit can housewives put up. ’ Going fast are bur hopes of delicious bottled fruit throughout the winter. Why are not jars coming forward? Are they not an essential industry? Cannot the Government department concerned do something about if before too late. There is little time left.—l am, etc., MARGERY L. TOUT,SON. Wellington, February 10.
