SLEEPERS AWAKENED
Slight Earthquake Yesterday
Many residents of Wellington and surrounding districts were, wakened by a sharp earthquake at 5.47 a.m. yesterday. It was preceded by a rumbling noise, an(F lasted several seconds, in the course ot which there was a sharp jolt. It was not of sufficient strength to cause any structural damage, but wooden houses creaked- under its influence. The Dominion Observatory reports that its recordings indicate the epicentre to be 60 to 70 miles from Kelburu, and it was rather more deep-seated than usual. The direction was probably to the north-west. The intensity was about 3 on the Merealli scale. The acting director of the observatory, Mr. R. 0. Hayes, said yesterday that the redent succession of minor earthquakes in the district was nothing out of the ordinary.
