Mr. R. L. Button, asked why the farmers of these ridings were slow in paying their rates. Cr. J. J. Alaher: The explanation rs simple. Mr. Chairman. The farmers are hard up; they are carrying on on 1938 prices and 1943 costs. Cr. Alaher said the nearby farmers who wore supplying milk to the AAellington City Council’s Milk Deplrtment, received 91<i. a gallon for their mill;, which the department was retailing at 2Sd. a gallon. The Wellington farmers bad received no increase in the price of milk, while all other dairyfarmers throughout New Zealand had been granted a 10 per cent increase. To show how farmers were up against it, it was only necessary to state that No. 8 fencing wire, winch before the war could be purchased for £l9 a ton, today cost £45 a ton.
