Large Japanese Forces Being Smashed
(Received December- 6, 11.55 p.m.) CHUNGKING, December 5. . Chinese troops, supported by American bombers and fighters, have encircled and partly wiped out large Japanese forces north-west of Changteh, states a Chungking communique. The Chinese also trapped Japanese columns south of Changteh. Artillery -shelled ferries laden with Japanese soldiers attempting to cross the Yuan River south of Changteh, killing many. American patrol planes drove off enemy planes which arrived to support the Japanese land forces.. The Chinese have made gains iu Hupeh Province, 300 Japanese, including their commander, being killed in the vicinity of IJingmen, 60 miles north-east of Ichang. Much material was also captured. General Chennault’s headquarters in China announced that China-based bombers sank 49,000 tons of Japanese shipping and destroyed 33 enemy aircraft and lost three during November.
