AIR BATTLE OVER HANOVER
Raiders Leave Big Fires LONDON, September 28. Last night’s powerful R.A.F. attack on Hanover was the second in a week, and many big fires were started. Lust Wednesday’s raid was described as one ot the most concentrated of the war, though it lasted only half an hour. The crews last night encountered a belt of bad weather in the North Sea. Over the target the visibility was good, and the crews were able to pick out their objectives clearly. The Germans put up a strong delence, and fighters were met bv the bombers as soon as they were over enemy territory. Flak was heavy over Hanover at the beginning, but it either wilted under the rapid boniibing or was withheld to leave the air clear for fighters. The enemy dropped flares from a great height and concentrated the many searchlights into one giant cone. One pilot said Be had never seen so many combats over a target area. Fires spread rapidly after the bombing and could be seen as the crews recrossed the coast on their way home. An attack ou Emden followed yesterday’s daylight raid .by American Fortresses. Brunswick was also attacked. Fighters on intruder actions had a good night over north-western Germany and Holland. They shot down seven German aircraft.
