PATRIOTIC COUNCIL
At the monthly meeting of the Wellingiton Metropolitan Patriotic Council on Monday it was reported that a letter of thanks had been forwarded to the Licensed Victuallers’ Association for the donation of £694/2/9, the proceeds of a golf day organized z by the association. A similar letter was forwarded to the Wellington Rugby Union thanking the union for its cheque for £667, the net proceeds of the Arnfy North v. South, football match at Athletic Park. ” A letter was received by the council forwarding a donation of £134 from the staff of the Railways Department.
The secretary, Mr. V. Ward, reported That £2O had been received from the Post land Telegraph Department staff, making •their contributions to the patriotic fund '£1649. A letter was received from the national 'hoard advising that the Anzac Division [of the British War Relief Society of fU.'S.A. had given £5OO for Christmas parteels for the soldiers serving overseas. I Cards to that effect arc to be insert ed (in 1000 parcels. . 'The wool room record for August was !aS follows: 559 scarves, 469 mittens, 652 balaclavas, and 696 hussifs. ; The A.N.A. Club reported that_for the /.five' weeks ended .Tune 30. 13,605 meals Chad been served and 8515 persons had [attended the club’s dances; for the four * weeks ended ,7 uly 28 the tally was 10.296 imeals and 6868 at dances; for the four |weeks ended August 25 8960 meals and 6920 at dances.
Mr. Ward reported that the. Glide skating rink for service people had been opened on Saturday and had sb far been a ‘gfceat success. At the-service'sports centre, toward which the council was contributing £2200. the work of preparing the building for its new purpose was in hand. Messrs. E. E. Brooking, F. Jones and Lient.-Colone! Breech, with the mayor (ex-oflicio); had been appointed members of the centre committee.
Mr. F. Jones said that the centre was being provided with a wooden floor, and he suggested that the place might serve as a dormitory for servicemen in au emergency. If that were agreed to, Army Headquarters would provide the.necessary palliasses and blankets. This matter has still to be discussed by the centre committee. which includes representatives of the city council, the citizens’ committee and the American Red Cross. Messrs. J. Annaud-,Smith. E. Palliser and J. 11. Collins were appointed to the appeals committee of the council.
