AGED, STOOPING, GREY-FACED
Pen Picture Of Hitler HAUNTED BY FEARS (By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright.) (Received September 28, 9 p.m.) LONDON, September 27. The Swedish journalist, M. Gunnar Pihl, in an article in the “Daily Telegraph,” says: “The last time I saw Hitler, in the spring of 1943, he had recovered from the attacks of hysteria, but was aged, stooping, lean and grey faced. His eyes were haunted by fears of the future, as if he shared with the majority of his soldiers a foretaste of defeat. “The elastic defence and the shortening of fronts constitute Germany’s last gamble. She is still immensely strong, but it is just as dangerous for the Allies to over-estimate as to under-estimate that strength,” continued Pihl. “Germany needs time to carry out her retreats and stabilize her position. She may then-look-around for a political settlement before being overwhelmed by a military defeat. It is essential that she not be given time to carry through these plans. Remember always the psychological weakness of the German armed forces is that they are subconsciously convinced of approaching defeat.”
