RUGBY IN THE MUD
Canterbury Beaten By Wellington
In a rare mud scramble at. Athletic Park, Wellington, on Saturday afternoon, before a crowd of about 1000. who paid £235 at the gates, Wellington beat Canterbury in the return Rugby match this season by IB points to six. The weather was line, and there was an absence of wind, but heavy rain overnight aiid in the morning bad made the ground a quagmire, and it was almost impossible for the players to keep their feet, let alone play good football. Under the conditions, the teams gave a surprisingly good display, anil the ninny sweeping footrushes roused the crowd to enthusiasm. Wellington owed its win to the thrust of the forwards in the loose, and the superior pace of the backs.
Tries were scored for Wellington by Revan. Wales. Jaeger, and Stjinaway, two of which were converted by Webster, who played an outstanding game nt full-back. Canterbury’s points came fronr a try by Bond and a penalty goal by Flynn, who made a sound last line of defence for the visitors. Mr. J. Hepburn was referee.
