FOUND UTTERLY EMPTY

Grim Novorossisk Scene

(Received September 23, 8.40 p.m.) LONDON, September 23. One hundred thousand persons from Novorossisk have suffered a terrible fate, according to official Moscow reports. The town has been mutilated. It was dead and empty when the Red Army marched in; not a single human being, and not even a dog or cat, was found alive. The bodies of many civilians were found in ditches, but the reports state that even the Germans can liardiy have thus wholly disposed of sucli a number. It is assumed that the overwhelming majority were driven into forced labour. A German order which was posted throughout Novorossisk said: “All citizens found remaining in the town will be shot.” A 40-ycar-old woman with four children was found in a cellar in the outskirts. They were the only humans, anywhere near. The Germans had stripped Novorossisk, taking even children’s toys and women's clothes. POLTAVA FALLS LONDON, September 23. .Moscow reports the occupation of Poltava, cornerstone of the German defences before the Dnieper bend.
