Search For Truth

Sir, —Anyone will agree that it is almost impossible to find out the truth about anything or anybody in this age of falsehood and half-truths, and I must say that the recent election campaign is a disgrace to any country that has any self-respect left. .The people of this country are filled with distortions and half-truths from morning till night. 1* or instance,, take the tales that are told about the cost of living, certain politicians pretending that it has not risen considerably. not because they don’t think the public know it but because they want to save their own faces. What about the postal rates which were increased 100 per cent, on letters, and about the same on parcels? What would our Labour politicians say if any firm doubled the cost of nearly everything it sold without increasing the wages of the workers. The workers are paying through the nose for social security. When most of them reach the age of 65 the cost of “VinS will have gone up so much they will be no better off than they were ou the miserable pensions they got under any other Government. The politicians 'talk as it they were making a present to the people when it is the people who themselves are paving taxation and getting a pretty poor return for their investment. I was told by one of the leading boot shops in AA ellington the other day that no shoes would keep out the wet, but I could get a fairly reliable pair for 57/6. A few years ago I could have bought a better pair for 25/-. There is a mighty lot of talk about finance these days by politicians because they know that the average person knows no more about it than they do themselves. A man only has to talk a lot about finance to be classed as. somebody with superior intellect and lie is admired by the ignorant and can get votes. I have hardly ever met a man who could talk a lot about finance who ever did any good for himself, unless he were a politician. It looks as if workers and everyone may have to go through a very long drain before we can see daylight and truth. Till we have truth and nothing but Hie truth we will still continue to go downhill and not uphill as many politicians, and those with their own axes to grind would have us believe. —I am, etc., L. I>. MAUNSELL. Alastcrton, September’-Y. .
