CONTROL AT THEATRES

Use Of Fire Exits

Control at theatres in case of a fire alarm and the use <?f exits came" once more before the Wellington Fire Board at yesterday’s meeting. “The trouble is,” said Mr. M. Fraser, “that these exits are never used as a regular thing, so that in case of an alarm and panic, the public naturally make for the exits they know. What is wanted is that the public should be regularly trained to leave by the exit which serves the block in which they have been seated.” If necessary, there should he people there to direct them to such exits and signs to show where they were. Mr. V. Edgar said that on the. last two occasions on which he had visited one city theatre, requests had been made for the audience to leave the theatre by the nearest exits, and they had done so. The chairman, Mr. S. S. Dean, said the board would direct the attention of the city council, which had to do with the issue of licenses for theatres and dance halls, to what was required. It was decided to request the council to take immediate action.
