RAID ON GERMAN DAMS

N.Z. Airman Gains tI.F.C.

Flying Officer Leonard Chambers, of Karamea. who took part in the raid against the German dams last month, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, states official advice received by the Air Department, Wellington. “On the night of May 16 a Lancaster bomber force was detailed to attack the Mohne, Eder and Sorpe dams,” says the citation accompanying the award. “It was a difficult and hazardous operation, calling for great skill and courage and close co-operation among the crews of Hie attacking aircraft. The Mohne and Eder dams were breached and a telling blow was struck atthe enemy. This conspicuous success reflects the greatest credit on the efforts of Flying Officer Chambers.” Born in Karamea, Flying Officer Chnnibers was educated at Parkvale School, Hastings, and Arapito School. Karamea. He enlisted ns an air gunner shortly after war broke out and was trained in New Zealand and Canada from September 29, 1940. He was commissioned in August, 1942, and promoted to flying officer in Februarj' of this year.
