WASHINGTON, May G. The Secretary of War, Mr. 11. L. Stimson, announced that Lieutenant-Gen-eral Jacob Devers, at present Commander of the Armoured Force, had been appointed to succeed Lieutenant-General F. M. Andrews, as commander in the European theatre. „ Mr. Stimson said that General Devers was eminently fitted for the. command. He recently made an extensive inspection of the European, African, and Middle East theatres of war, and is thoroughly conversant with the Allies’ present! a nd future plans. The United Press says that observers consider it noteworthy that while General Andrews was an air officer General 'Devers is from the Armoured Force, indicating that the appointment is in line with preparations for a land invasion in the west.
