MOUNTING FURY OF AIR ATTACK

Enemy Headquarters Hit By Bomb TANKS DESTROYED (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, July 16. Tile Air Ministry news service states: “The strength of our air attack on the land forces in the Western Desert is everywhere increasing, and fighter-bombers have pulverized many targets in the enemy mechanized forces. In one operation two tanks and 12 trucks were destroyed and two more tanks were left unserviceable. Another attack destroyed a tank, and considerable damage was done in a third operation. On this operation the pilots found two groups of tanks, about 15 in each, clustering together, and placed bombs right in the centre of each group. “Later they also bombed a concentration of 10 tanks and a large number of motor transport vehicles. Fourteen vehicles were destroyed in another group standing round a blockhouse, and there were many direct hits on other groups and on enemy gun positions. “Enemy headquarters were also raided and forced to move to a new position. They were attacked as they moved, and a direct hit was scored on three trailers, including one which was well guarded. “Light bombers scored hits on motor transport and armoured cars.” Today’s Cairo communique stated that bombers last evening attacked Benghazi, where fires were started. Last night Tobruk was again attacked in force. The enemy continued their attacks on Malta on a reduced scale. From all operations two of our aircraft failed to return. The communique adds: “Our planes also attacked enemy headquarters in the battle area. The enemy bombing slightly increased. Our interceptors shot down seven enemy planes and damaged others.” .
