King Honours Brave People
HEROISM AND DEVOTION RUGBY, April 16.
Malta has won the George Cross. The announcement of this Royal recognition of heroic endurance was made from Buckingham Palace, and creates a precedent which has sent a thrill of pride throughout the Umpire. It is the first time His Majesty has conferred the decoration on a part of the British Commonwealth.
The announcement stated that the King had cabled to the Governor of Malta: “To honour her brave people, I award the George Cross to the island fortress of Malta, to bear witness to heroism and devotion that will long be famous in history. George R. 1.” The Governor replied that the people of.the garrison were deeply touched by the kind thought. "It has greatly encouraged everyone,” ho said. “All are determined that, with God's help, Malta will not weaken, but endure till victory.” A London message states that enemy activity oh Wednesday was negligible. One Messerschmitt 109 dropped bombs on an aerodrome, afterward making a machinegun attack.
