Extraction Of Magnesium By New Process

(British Official Wireless.i (Received April 10, 10 p.m.) RUGBY, April 15.

A Montreal scientist, Dr. L. M. I’idgeon, is reported to have discovered a new method for the extraction of magnesium which is likely to have a considerable bearing on Canada's contribution of that mineral to the resources of the Allies. Such importance is attached to it that the United States Government Ims asked special permission to use the process and, both in the United Stales and t'tinada, plants are being established to apply the discovery on a commercial scale.

It. is expected that produetion will begin by midsummer. The output will amount at Hie outset to some two tons of metal daily. As additional units tire built Hie rale will be increased to 20 lons daily. The process, which employs a new thermal method of metallic abstraction, wilt be commercialized by a new Government-owned company, and Hie Government will also spend more than £1,000,000 on the initial plant.
