CHRISTCHURCH, November 23. Yesterday afternoon her Excellency Lady Newall inspecte'd the nursing divisions of the St. John Ambulance Brigade. This morning their Excellencies the Governor-General and Lady Newall attended divine service in the chapel of Christs College. Subsequently his Excellency gave an address to the boys of the college. Ministerial. The Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, Prime Minister, returned to Wellington yesterday from Auckland. He will leave tonight for Dunedin. The Hon, F. Jones, Minister of Defence, will leave Wellington tonight for Dunedin. The Hon. W. E. Parry, Minister, of Internal Affairs and Social Security, will leave Wellington by the steamer express tonight for Christchurch to fulfil a number of engagements connected with the departments under, his control.
Captain D. C. Crozier, assistant director of mechanical transport for the Southern Military District, has been promoted to the rank of major.
Mr. J. Abel was re elected honorary treasurer of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation at its annual conference at Wairakei. He has returned to Wellington.
Mr. Arnall Bloxhain, formerly chief radio officer in the Mataroa, has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (overseas). Mrs. Bloxham lives in Christchurch.
Captain A. F. E. Tylee, formerly adjutant of the 3rd Field Company and 7th Works Company, New Zealand Engineers, has been appointed assistant works officer of the Southern Military District, and has assumed his new duties. Lieutenant T. L. Fancourt has been appointed adjutant of both companies of the New Zealand Engineers.
Messrs. G. S. Leeder and N. Macpherson have been appointed West Coast (North Island) delegates to the N.Z.A.A.A. council in Wellington, and Messrs. 11. McCormick and A. L. Stevens are the Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay centre's appointees, with Messrs. P. N. Robinson and I. M. Plimnier the same centre’s delegates to the New Zealand Cycling Council.
Mr. S. G. Holland, Leader of the Opposition, was farewelled by members of the Canterbury divisional committees of the National Party ,at a recent gathering. With Mr. Holland, who is to go to Great Britain at the invitation of the Empire Parliamentary Association, were Messrs. A. Gordon, Dominion president of the party, and P. F. Kelly, Hastings, a member of the Dominion executive.
Mr. Edward 11. Major, who was closely allied to the business side of J C Williamson, Ltd., in Australia, for many years, died in Melbourne last month. Mr. Major, who visited New Zealand on only two or three occasions, joined the firm in 1899, and was appointed secretary in 1911, a position he field for many years. During the last years of the life of Mr. James C. Mll- - Mr. Major was his right-hand num, contemporary with the late Alessrs. Charles Westmacott, James Hazlitt, Richard Stewart and W. L. Goodman.
