Three £5O Penalties

Five fines of £i>o each and two of £25 each were imposed on seven persons for carrying on businesses as bookmakers, in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday and on Thursday. For John Matthew Stobart, Mr. R. E. Pope said he had entered business as a tobacconist in Courtenay Place seven months ago and had taken bets from customers in a small way to ingratiate himself with them. He was fined £•><)• Henry Austin Stopforth, a tobacconist, was fined £5O, and Ins assistant, Arthur Henry Purkis, was fined £25. Gustavius Sydney Davis. Albert Ed ward Harris and Robert Arthur Watts were each fined £5O, and Cyril James Grant was fined £25.
