A large sunfish, estimated to weigh at least two tons, recently came ashore at Taniaterau, near I’arua Bay, Auckland. The fish was 10ft. Un. in length and its body was 3ft. thick. From Ute tip of the dorsal tin to the tip of Hie anal tin, on the underside of the body, it measured lift. 3in. Out of all proportion to tlie rest of the body, the mouth was very small, being no more Ilian Gin. across. The fish had no defined teeth, and its skin was dark grey in colour. Sunfish, which are harmless, are usually found in warm and temperate waters. They swim slowly and in a vertical position. The body is roughly round, and Ihe fish carries a large dot’snl tin ou ils back and directly under this on tlie underside of the lislt is a large amtl tin.
