CHILDREN’S PLAYS

The Crown Theatre, Eastbourne, was filled to overflowing on a recent night, when the Eastbourne branch of the Junior Drama League presented its second entertainment for the year. Three plays were given, “Behind the Stones,” “Something for Nothing” and “The Truth About the Tarts,” and they were all highly appreciated. Much care and trouble had evidently been expended on the settings and properties, which were realistic and charmchildren’s acting was very good and showed considerable improvement on their previous performances, while their costumes caused interest and amusement. “Mrs. Snail” and “Mrs. Hedgehog” looked particularly realistic and “Mr. Worm” wriggled convincingly. The older girls, who took part m “The Truth About the Tarts,” produced by Mrs. Beveridge, sustained their parts well throughout the play, and gave a very amusing performance. The surplus funds from the entertainment are to be handed over to the Merchant Navy.

Slimmer hats of felt appears to be a contradiction in terms but this year’s summer felts at Agnes Samson’s are so featherweight that they make the most charming wide brimmed picture hats. She is making, too, such lots of smaller hats in felt and in felt and straw combined. One smart little model has a brim of white straw in a fancy weave but the crown is openwork navy felt, hand cut, with just a bootlace tie of navy felt round it. A lovely cherry hat in a basket straw is bound and banded with navy grosgrain. Agnes Samson, Lambton Quay.—Advt.
