AMERICAN TANKER TORPEDOED
Mr. Hull Outspoken (Received October 5, 8.50 p.m.) NEW YORK, October 4. The United States Embassy at Rio de Janeiro has received a report from the United States Consulate at Recife (Pernambuco) that an Americanowned ship sailing under the flag of Panama, the tanker I. C. White (7052 tons), has been torpedoed. The report says that 18 survivors were picked up by another ship and are expected to arrive in Rio de Janeiro today. The Standard Oil Company announced in New York that the I. C. White was transferred to Britain six months ago and that, pending transfer of flags, she was operated by the Panama Transport Company. The ship had sailed under British direction, though she had an all-American crew. It now appears that only 18 have been rescued so far. Commenting on the sinking, the Secretary of State, Mr. Hull, said: “This seems to be another act of lawlessness and piracy and attempted frightfulness in connexion with a general movement to drive people off the Atlantic, which is part of the world movement of conquest.”
