Before his appointment to the bench Mr. Luxford was a member of the legal profession in Auckland. Born in Palmerston North in 1890, he was educated in Palmerston North, Dannevirke, and Wanganui Collegiate School. He was admitted to the Bar at Hamilton in 1913 and subsequently practised at Te Awamutu. In 1917 he was seriously wounded, and was subsequently invalided out of the Army. Late in 1916 ho had been promoted to the rank of major. Mr. Luxford resumed practice in Hamilton in 1919, but moved to Auckland, where he followed his profession with the late Mr. W. J. Napier. Later he joined the firm of Fitchett and Rees. He was appointed a stipendiary magistrate in 1928, and in the following year was made Chief Judge of Western Samoa. On the expiry of his term there in 1934, he returned to the Dominion and was stationed in Wellington as a magistrate.
