There has been an epidemic of illness among Maoris in the Otewa and OtorohtiDgtt districts, and a number of deaths have occurred in recent weeks. It is thought by the Maoris themselves that lung trouble is the cause of the inaladv. Dr. L. S.‘Davis, district medical officer of health, Hamilton, and Mr. J. P. Terry, inspector of health, have been making investigations. In response to the appeal for buggy candle lamps to be used on tramcars during a total blackout, about 80 had been received from all parts of the North Island, said the manager, Mr. A. E. Ford, at a meeting of the Auckland Transport Board. Most of the lamps were in excellent condition and some had never been used. Completely to equip Auckland’s tramcars, about 220 lamps will be required.
