FIRST DAFFODIL SHOW OF SEASON

Display At Eastbourne GOVERNOR-GENERAL ATTENDS Finality was reached at the East Harbour'Horticulture Society’s spring show, held in the Crown Theatre, Eastbourne, on (Saturday, in the district tables’ competition, which was won by Eastbourne South.; The judging was on general display, excellence of flowers, variety of flowers and unusual or rarer flowers ' exhibited at the summer, mid-summer and spring shows. His Excellency the GovernorGeneral, iSir Cyril Newall, officially opened the show, which was largely attended, and there was a magnificent display of flowers, i The prize for the; tables, competition is £5/5/-, donated by Mr. E. J. Righton, a vice-president, and is to be used for patriotic or charitable purposes by the committee winning it. The plaeings were : Eastbourne South 1, York Bay 2, Day’s Bay 3, : Eastbourne North 4. Point Howtird also made a small table display. Mr.; Rigfrton, as sponsor of the • competition, said that it had 'been most stimulating and very satisfactory fbom. the' point of view of sustaining interest. The fables competition had given the most modest, gardeners the opportunity of being represented in the show. The mayor, Mr. E. Wise, cordially welcomed Ms Excellency to Eastbourne. All were familiar with the sterling .work of Sir Cyril Newall as Chief of Air Staff in Britain. The foundations of the R.A.F. had been well and truly laid. New Zealand was exceptionally fortunate to have as Governor-General one who had shown such wisdom, experience and ability in planning the strategy and organization of the air force.

Deputizing for the president of the Society, Mr. E. H. Anderson, who was indisposed, Mr. Righton said that the society was highly honoured in that, being the “baby of them all” in the Wellington district, it had been the first to be opened by the GovernorGeneral.. , ■’ His Excellency’s Speech. His Excellency said that Lady Newall was. extremely sorry that indisposition bad prevented her from coming, as she was particularly fond of flowers. . She had been medically advised not to go out in this sunshine (laughter), but hoped to visit Eastbourne at a later date. “One great pleasure on my arrival in New Zealand,” added his Excellency, “was to see all the English flowers. It does make it look like Home. You have a large display of English flowers in this country, and of native flowers, too.” His Excellency ! said that he had been to a good many flower shows, and had annually visited that at Chelsea. He congratulated Eastbourne upon its-exhibits, and said that he had been particularly impressed by the tiny baskets shown by the children. Gardening; in England was being carried on as usual and catalogues were being issued.
