SOUTH AFRICA’S SEA DEFENCES
Force Of Small Vessels (British Official Wireless.) (Received September 12, S.lO p.m.) RUGBY, September 11. The recent award of six Distinguished Service Crosses and Distinguished Service Medals to officers and men serving.in His Majesty’s South African ships is evidence of South Africa’s seaward defence. South Africa - , though responsible for the land defence of Britain’s African naval station at Simonstown, has no navy of her own, but at the outbreak of war a seaward defence force under the late Rear-Ad-miral G. W. Hallifax was organized to guard South Africa's ports and territorial waters. The ships are trawlers, whalers and other small vessels which were equipped and refitted in South African workshops for minesweeping, coastal patrol and anti-submarine work. It was announced that the ships of the force were operating with the British Navy. Each of the ships has a complement of roughly 2(1 officers and men.
