MAIZE PRICES

What Growers Will Get For 1942 Crop

MINISTER’S STATEMENT Maize prices for the crop to be sown shortly and harvested in 1912 were announced yesterday by the Minister of Marketing and Agriculture, Mt. Barclay. Mr. Barclay stated that during the last few years it had been the aim of the Government to obtain an increase in the area sown In maize in order to provide a yield sufficient to meet New Zealand’s requirements, so that it should not be necessary to import substantial quantities at high prices toward the end of the season, such as had customarily been required during the past few years. Last year a very good response was made by growers to the appeal for a larger area, with the result that the crop just harvested would prove sufficient to meet all demands till the coming season’s crop became available about August of next year. This would result in considerable benefit to poul-try-farmers and other users of maize, as the locally-grown supplies would be available during the later months of the season at prices considerably lower than those usually ruling for imported maize. With a view to maintaining the area at the point necessary to produce enough for consumptive demand, prices to be paid to growers for the 1942 crop had been fixed, as follows: —July delivery, 5/6 a bushel; August delivery, 5/8; September delivery, 5/9; October delivery, 5/10; November delivery, 5/11; December delivery, 6/-; January/February delivery, 6/1; March/June delivery, 6/2, These prices were “sacks in” on trucks Bay of Plenty and Hawke’s Bay stations, or f.0.b.5.i., Gisborne.

At- these remunerative prices, Mr. Barclay said he felt confident that last year’s area would at least be maintained.
